Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French bigarade, bigarrade.
Etymology: < French bigarade, †bigarrade (1651 in the source translated in quot. 1658 at sense 1; 1600 in an isolated early attestation as bigarrat ), probably < Occitan bigarrada < bigarrar to variegate (related to French bigarrer : see bigarreau n.) + -ada -ade suffix. Compare Occitan bigarrat (1524), Catalan bigarrat (a1520), Spanish bigarrado (1528), all in sense ‘multicoloured’.
1. More fully bigarade orange. The Seville orange, a variety of the sour orange, Citrus aurantium; (also) the fruit of this tree, used in cooking and for flavouring liqueurs.The fruit, leaves, and flowers of the bigarade are also sources of essential oils; cf. neroli n.
