Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Marathi. Partly a borrowing from Rajasthani. Etymons: Marathi rāo; Rajasthani rāo.
Etymology: < Marathi rāo, rāu and Rajasthani rāo, rāu chief, prince < Sanskrit rājan king (see raja n.1), via the Prakrit nominative form rāo (the oblique stems of which > Hindi rāy : see Rai Bahadur n.).
In South Asia: (the title of) a chief or prince; (also more generally) a title affixed to the name of any distinguished person.
