Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: quinoline n., aldehyde n., -ine suffix5.
Etymology: < quin- (in quinoline n.) + ald- (in aldehyde n.) + -ine suffix5, after German Chinaldin (O. D. Doebner & W. von Miller 1882, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 15 3075). Compare French quinaldine (1885 (in a translation from German) or earlier).
Chemistry and Pharmacology.
An oily liquid which is present in coal tar, used in the preparation of a variety of pharmaceuticals and dyes and as a sedative in the handling and transport of fish.Chemical name: 2-methylquinoline; CH3·C9H6N.

1883 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 44 602 The following salts of quinaldine have been prepared.
1911 Encycl. Brit. XI. 759/1 Quinaldine (α-methylquinoline) is present in coal-tar... It is a colourless liquid which boils at 247°C.
1937 Thorpe's Dict. Appl. Chem. (ed. 4) I. 84/2 Quinaldine is obtained by passing acetylene and aniline over heated pumice coated with zinc chloride, acetylene and ethyl-aniline.
1991 Sea Frontiers Feb. 25/1 Quinaldine is considered an anesthetic rather than a toxin... When properly diluted and administered, fish can be kept sedated for extended periods.
