Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French quincaillerie.
Etymology: < French quincaillerie ironmonger's trade, ironmongery (late 13th cent. in Old French as quinquaillerie ), hardware shop (1876 or earlier) < quincaille hardware, ironmongery (although this is apparently first attested later: c1360 as quinquelle , quincalle ; < the same (imitative) base as clinquant (see clinquant adj.), with assimilation of the consonant cluster in the first syllable + -aille , suffix forming nouns: compare -al suffix1) + -erie -ery suffix.
