Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin radiolus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin radiolus spine of a fossil echinoid (beginning of the 18th cent. or earlier) < classical Latin radius radius n. + -olus -ole suffix1.The Latin noun is attested in the 4th cent. in sense ‘faint ray of the sun’, and in classical Latin denoting a kind of long olive.
Zoology.
1. In a sea urchin: each of the large spines which articulate with the primary tubercles. Also radiole spine.
