Etymology: < German Chinova (in Chinovaroth , 1861 in the passage translated in quot. 1862 for quinova red n. at sense 1) < French kina-nova the bark of the tree formerly known as Cinchona nova (P.-J. Pelletier & J.-B. Caventou 1821, in Jrnl. de pharm. 7 109; < kina quina n. + classical Latin nova , feminine of novus new adj.), with elision of the second syllable (probably after quinovic adj., quinovate n., quinovin n.).

Chemistry.

1. quinova red n. now rare a resinous substance derived from the tannin present in the bark of the tree formerly known as Cinchona nova (perhaps cascarilla, genus Ladenbergia).
