A crystalline compound which is one of the five main bases occurring in nucleic acids and is a component of numerous compounds important in cellular metabolism and respiration (cf. adenosine n.); abbreviated A.Adenine is a purine derivative, 6-aminopurine, and pairs with the pyrimidine base thymine in double-stranded DNA and uracil in RNA.
