Etymology: < German Adenin (A. Kossel 1885, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 18 79; < ancient Greek ἀδήν aden n. + German -in -ine suffix⁵), with (in form adenine) remodelling of the ending (compare -ine suffix⁵).

Biochemistry.

A crystalline compound which is one of the five main bases occurring in nucleic acids and is a component of numerous compounds important in cellular metabolism and respiration (cf. adenosine n.); abbreviated A.Adenine is a purine derivative, 6-aminopurine, and pairs with the pyrimidine base thymine in double-stranded DNA and uracil in RNA. Formula: C₅H₅N₅.
