Ran.2

Brit. /rɑː/, U.S. //
Inflections: Plural ras, raer.
Forms: also with lower case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Norwegian. Etymon: Norwegian ra.
Etymology: < Norwegian ra (plural raer) moraine, ridge, originally a variant of rad row, cognate with Old Icelandic rǫð, Old Swedish radh (Swedish rad), Old Danish rad (Danish rad), Middle Low German rat; further etymology uncertain. The sense ‘bank, ridge’ is already found for the word in Old Icelandic. The spec. sense in which it was borrowed into English apparently derives from its application to two ridges on either side of the Oslo fjord (compare Swedish ra moraine of gravel, stone and sand, typically running from east to west, especially in Norway (1899; < Norwegian)). Isolated borrowings of forms with suffixed definite article (raerne, raerna) are also found.
Physical Geography.
Any of a series of terminal or recessional moraines in southern Norway having the form of long ridges of gravel and clay with a covering of large stones. Frequently attributive, esp. in Ra moraine.
