Etymology: < ancient Greek ῥαϕιδ-, ῥαϕίς needle < the base of ῥάπτειν to sew (see rhapsode n.) + -ίς -id suffix2.For possible plural examples of sense 2 see raphide n. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (rēi·fis) /ˈreɪfɪs/.
Chiefly Botany. Obsolete.
