单词 ratine
释义

ratinen.

Brit. /rəˈtiːn/, /raˈtiːn/, U.S. /rəˈtin/, /ræˈtin/
Forms:

α. 1600s– ratine, 1700s ratin; Scottish pre-1700 rataine, pre-1700 ratein, pre-1700 ratin, pre-1700 1700s– ratine.

β. 1600s– ratteen, 1700s– rateen.

γ. 1900s– ratiné ( Brit. /ˈratᵻneɪ/, U.S. /ˈˌrætnˈˌeɪ/).

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ratine.
Etymology: < French ratine (1593 in Middle French; compare Old French rastin (1260)), of uncertain origin; perhaps < Middle French rater to scrape (see ratissage n.) + -ine -een suffix1 (see further Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch at *rasĭtoria). With β. forms compare -een suffix1. In γ. forms probably after French ratiné, past participle of ratiner to give (a fabric) a similar (rough, bobbly) effect to that of ratine (1766).
In early use (frequently in form ratteen): a kind of coarse twilled woollen fabric, usually with a (curled) nap; a frieze or drugget. Later: (usually in form ratine or ratiné) a plain-woven fabric made of cotton or other material with a loose open weave and rough surface, principally used for hard-wearing outer clothing, furniture covers, etc. Also: a piece of this. Frequently attributive. While the anglicized form ratteen usually refers to the woollen fabric and the forms ratine and ratiné to the modern fabric (made of various materials), this distinction is not absolute. Early instances of the form ratine presumably refer to a woollen material.
