Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian rallentando, rallentare.
Etymology: Apparently < Italian rallentando (although this is apparently first attested later in this sense: 1826), use as adjective of present participle of rallentare to decelerate, slow down (a1347) < ri- re- prefix + allentare to diminish (a1294; < a- ( < classical Latin ad ad- prefix) + lento slow (see lento adv. and adj.). Compare relent v.1
