单词 ramanas rose
释义

Ramanas rosen.

Brit. /ˌramənəs ˈrəʊz/, U.S. /ˌræmənəs ˈroʊz/
Forms: Also with capital initial in the second element and occasionally with lower case initials.
Origin: A borrowing from Japanese, combined with an English element. Etymons: Japanese hamanasu , rose n.1
Etymology: < Japanese hamanasu (1709 or earlier; compare hamanashi (1734)), literally ‘shore-pear’, the name of this rose in Japan (on account of the similarity of its fruit to Japanese pears; < hama shore, beach +nasu , regional variant of nashi pear (see nashi n.), with change of kanji character; nasu as simplex means ‘aubergine’) + rose n.1The change of initial letter is not fully accounted for, but is probably due to mishearing or misreading at an early stage of the transmission. It is first found in the following passage (and repeated in the book's index):1784 C. P. Thunberg Flora Iaponica xii. 213 Iaponice: Ramanas. Compare also:1838 C. G. F. Gore Rose Fanciers' Man. 86 Rosa Rugosa, called in Japan Ramanas. With Japanese nasu in sense ‘pear’ (as a variant of nashi) compare:1712 E. Kæmpfer Amœnitatum Exoticarum v. 800 Nas: Pyrus sativa. The transcription without final -u reflects its devoiced pronunciation after -s- in Japanese, where it is almost inaudible. An alternative derivation < Japanese ranman ‘full bloom’ cannot be substantiated.
The hardy shrub rose Rosa rugosa, native to East Asia but now widely cultivated and naturalized elsewhere; also called Japanese rose. See rugosa n.
