Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ramollissement.
Etymology: < French ramollissement (1726 or earlier; 1552 in Middle French in general sense ‘softening’) < ramolliss- , extended stem of ramollir to soften (1448; < re- re- prefix + amollir to soften: see amollish v.) + -ment -ment suffix. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ramolismaṅ) /ramɔlismɑ̃/.
Pathology. Obsolete.
Abnormal softening or loss of density of all or part of an organ, esp. the brain. Cf. malacia n. 2.
