Dict. at rampnen v. suggests a derivation < the (unattested) Middle English reflex of an (unattested) Old English noun *hrampe claw, hook, cognate with Middle Dutch ramp cramp (late 13th cent.; Dutch ramp ), Middle Low German ramp cramp, epileptic seizure, affliction, early modern German rampf cramp (15th cent.) < the same Germanic base as ramp v.¹ N.E.D. (1903) tentatively compares German rampeln , rempeln to push, shove, but both verbs are first attested much later (19th cent.) and are (originally students' slang words) of unknown origin, the form with -a- being a rare regional (Frankfurt) variant of the usual form with -e- . Perhaps compare earlier ram v.¹ and the Germanic verbs cited at that entry.
