Etymology: < modern Greek ρασοϕόρος monk of the lowest degree of the monastic hierarchy in the Eastern Orthodox Church (now chiefly in sense ‘person who wears a cassock, priest’; already in medieval Greek as ῥασοϕόρος ) < Byzantine Greek ῥάσον kind of napless woollen cloth, garment made of this cloth, especially monk's outer garment, cassock ( < classical Latin rāsus smooth, past participle of rādere to scrape, rub smooth: see raze v.) + ancient Greek -ϕόρος -phore comb. form. Compare Russian rjasofor (1843; 1773 as †rasofor ; < medieval Greek). Compare earlier rhasophoria n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (ra·zofō^əɹ) /ˈræzəʊfɔə(r)/.
