Compare later rance v.Compare also Older Scots ransoning in same sense (one isolated attestation), of uncertain origin, perhaps an alteration of, or a transmission error for, rancing, which would suggest earlier currency of the word:1531–2 in H. M. Paton Accts. Masters of Wks. (1957) I. 58 To the wodwrychtis of Allway for clengeing and ransonyng of xv pece gestis ordanit and coft for the said new werk [sc. a platform].
