Etymology: Probably < post-classical Latin rastellus grating, lattice (14th cent. in continental sources), transferred sense of classical Latin rāstellus rake < rāstrum rake (see rastrum n.) + -ellus -el suffix². Compare Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French rastel rake (12th cent.; French râteau), Middle French rasteau portcullis (1348), grating (1457), Italian rastello rake (13th cent.), portcullis (15th cent.).An earlier derivative formation on the same base is apparently shown by Middle English rastelynge railing or grating for a barge (early 15th cent., rare: see Middle Eng. Dict. at rastelinge n.).
