Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Bermuda , triangle n.
Etymology: < the name of Bermuda (see Bermuda n.) + triangle n., so called with reference to the roughly triangular outline of the area (with the corners typically taken to be off the coasts of Bermuda, Florida, and Puerto Rico).
A roughly triangular area of the western Atlantic between Bermuda and Florida associated with a high number of unexplained disappearances of boats and aircraft. Also figurative. Cf. the Devil's Triangle.Quot. 1936 shows an isolated use referring to the region between Nova Scotia, Bermuda, and Chesapeake Bay.
