Forms: see re- prefix and boil v.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, boil v.

Compare classical Latin rebullīre to bubble up, to cause to bubble up, Old Occitan rebulhir to retemper (steel) (c1219; Occitan rebolir , rebolhir to boil again, to ferment, to suffer greatly, to warm up), Spanish rebullir to boil again (1476), Italian ribollire to boil (c1350), to ferment (a1400), to boil again (1598 in Florio).
