Etymology: < re- prefix + agent n.1, by analogy, reagent standing in the same relation to react v.1 as agent n.1 does to act v. Compare post-classical Latin reagent-, reagens (1703 or earlier).
1. A person who or thing which is acted upon or reacts to something; something which acts as a reactive substance, force, etc. In later use often influenced by sense 2.
