Etymology: < Anglo-Norman recreire, recreere and Middle French recroire to desist, give up, to acknowledge oneself defeated, to yield in battle, to fail (c1100 in Old French in reflexive use; 12th cent. in intransitive use), to go back on what one has said (12th cent.), to tire (something) out (12th cent.), to become tired out (especially of a horse) (12th cent.), to confess (something) (13th cent.), to go back on one's sentiments or beliefs (13th cent.) < post-classical Latin recredere to own oneself bound by a tie of dependence (7th cent.), to confess, acknowledge, recognize (8th cent.), to recognize as genuine, avow (8th cent.), to surrender (oneself) (12th cent. in a British source), to release (a prisoner) on bail (13th cent.) < classical Latin re- re- prefix + crēdere to entrust (see credit v.). Compare Old Occitan recreire , Spanish †recreer (13th cent.), Italian ricredere (a1250). Compare recreant adj.
