单词 red sanders
释义

red sandersn.

Brit. /ˌrɛd ˈsandəz/, U.S. /ˌrɛd ˈsændərz/
Forms: see red adj. and n. and sanders n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: red adj., sanders n.1
Etymology: < red adj. + sanders n.1, originally after post-classical Latin sandala rubea, plural noun (1550 in the passage translated in quot. 1553). Compare Sanskrit rakta-candana , lit. ‘red sandalwood’ (with the second element compare sandal n.2), Dutch †roode sandalen , plural noun (1596 in the source translated in quot. 1598 at red sanderswood n.). Compare later red sanderswood n.
= red sanderswood n. In later use also: the tree yielding this wood.
