Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin adesse , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin adesse to be present ( < ad- ad- prefix + esse to be: see esse n.) + -ive suffix, after German adessiv (1837 or earlier) or French adessif (1839 or earlier).

Designating a case of nouns and pronouns (and adjectives in grammatical agreement with them) in Finnish and a number of other languages, expressing position on or near something, and a variety of other relationships, such as possession or instrumentality; (of a linguistic form) forming, relating to, or in this case.Originally with reference to Finnish and other Finno-Ugric languages, and subsequently to other Uralic languages and sometimes more widely.
