Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori rēinga.
Etymology: < Maori rēinga leap, place of leaping < rei to leap.Use with the definite article in English is after Maori te rēinga ( < te the + rēinga); this was also occasionally (and earlier) borrowed into English in full:1804 D. Collins Acct. Eng. Colony New S. Wales (ed. 2) xvi. 345 While the soul is received by the good Ea-tooa, an evil spirit is also in readiness to carry the impure part of the corpse..to Terry-inga.1822 Proc. Church Missionary Soc. 364 They say, that, at the death of a Chief, his soul goes to the Treaingha, at the North Cape.

In Maori tradition: the place (a cape in the far north of New Zealand) from which the spirits of the dead are believed to enter the next world; (hence) the land of departed spirits.

1820 Gram. & Voc. N. Zealand 202 Réinga, the place of flight, a descent on the side of a rock near the North Cape, New Zealand, where it is supposed that the departed spirits of the natives take their flight.
