单词 relievement
释义

relievementn.

Brit. /rᵻˈliːvm(ə)nt/, U.S. /rəˈlivm(ə)nt/, /riˈlivm(ə)nt/
Forms: late Middle English relevement, late Middle English 1600s– relievement, late Middle English–1500s releuement, 1600s releeuement, 1600s releevement, 1600s relieuement, 1700s relivement.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French relievement ; relieve v., -ment suffix.
Etymology: Partly < Anglo-Norman relievement, Anglo-Norman and Middle French relevement improvement, relief, redress (a1377 in Anglo-Norman; French relèvement (now historical in this sense); earlier in senses ‘feudal relief’ (1246 in Old French (Lorraine)) and ‘resurrection’ (c1200 in Old French); < relever relieve v. + -ment -ment suffix), and partly (especially in later use) < relieve v. + -ment suffix. Compare post-classical Latin relevamentum feudal relief (from 1086 in British sources), and also Spanish relevamiento (a1369), Italian rilevamento (a1306 as †relevamento ; also †rilievamento ), both in general sense ‘relief’. Compare earlier relevation n., relief n.2, relieving n., and later relevy n.1
Now rare (nonstandard in later use).
The action or an act of relieving; relief.
