单词 regalo
释义

regalon.

Forms:

α. 1600s–1800s regalo.

β. 1600s–1700s regalia.

γ. 1600s–1700s regalio.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Italian regalo; Spanish regalo.
Etymology: Partly < Italian regalo gift, something extremely pleasant (a1543) and partly < its probable etymon Spanish regalo abundance (c1400 or earlier), munificence, largesse (1444), indulgence, luxury, pampering (all late 15th cent. or earlier; 1270 or earlier apparently in sense ‘reward’) < the same base as regalar regale v. Compare Portuguese regalo pleasure, delicacy (1587). Compare regale n.2 and Romance forms cited at that entry. In the β. and γ. forms probably by misapprehension of the word form, perhaps by association with regalia n.1 N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (rega·lo) /reˈɡalo/.
Obsolete.
A present, esp. of choice food or drink; a lavish meal or entertainment. Also figurative. Cf. regale n.2
