Etymology: < Middle French remissible (French rémissible ) forgivable, pardonable (14th cent.), merciful (a1495) and its etymon post-classical Latin remissibilis forgivable, pardonable (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian; from c1230 in British sources) < classical Latin remiss- , past participial stem of remittere remit v. + -ibilis -ible suffix. Compare Spanish remisible (16th cent.), Italian remissibile (a1342). Compare remissable adj.
That may be remitted; capable or admitting of remission; esp. (of sin), able to be pardoned, forgivable.
