Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: regional adj., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < regional adj. + -ism suffix. Compare French régionalisme regional character, tendency to favour the autonomous development of the regions (both 1875), tendency only to consider the interests of one's own region (1878), linguistic feature peculiar to a particular region (1927), Italian regionalismo excessive interest and love for one's own region (1878), political tendency to favour regional autonomy (1879).
1. Chiefly Politics. The theory or practice of regional organization; esp. regional government or control as opposed to centralization; (later also) the grouping of several states, countries, etc. into a larger region for political, economic, or administrative purposes. Also: support for or advocacy of this.
