Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French remplaçant.
Etymology: < French remplaçant (1790; 1792 in specific use with reference to military service), use as noun of present participle of remplacer (see reimplace v.). Compare later remplaçante n.Not fully naturalized in English. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the less naturalized pronunciation (raṅplasaṅ) /rɑ̃plasɑ̃/.
A man who replaces or acts as a substitute for another; (in later use) esp. one who undertakes military service in place of another. Cf. remplaçante n.
