1881 Graphic 6 Aug. 131/3 Mr. Renshaw beat Mr. R. T. Richardson..by eighteen games to nine, his stroke, known as the ‘Renshaw smash’, gaining fourteen aces.
1883 Field 7 July 11/1 Deuce was called in five of the games, and the fifth game was won by four of the ‘Renshaw smashes’.

Gillmeister Tennis (1998) vi. 200 The author of a book on lawn tennis was apparently led to recommend, in the 1880s, a strategy for the four-handed game resembling the working of ‘two buckets in a well’. As soon as one player advanced to the net, he argued, his partner should beat a hasty retreat to the baseline, and vice versa. Needless to say, the Renshaw smash sent the two buckets violently to the bottom.
