Etymology: < Middle French retraictif, retractif that prevents (early 15th cent.), causing withdrawal (1537; French rétractif ) and its etymon post-classical Latin retractivus serving to retract (13th cent.), causing withdrawal (c1377, 1426 in British sources) < classical Latin retract- , past participial stem of retrahere retract v.1 + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Italian ritrattivo (a1406).
