Etymology: < Anglo-Norman resurdre, ressurdre, Anglo-Norman and Middle French resourdre, Middle French ressourdre (French (now regional) resourdre , ressourdre ) to rise up again (end of the 10th cent. in Old French (in a text showing Occitan influence) as resurdre , originally and frequently with reference to Christ), to relieve (a person), to come to the aid of (a person) (c1135), to spring up again, to recommence (second half of the 12th cent., originally with reference to quarrels), to recover, recuperate (c1200, originally used reflexively) < classical Latin resurgere resurge v.¹, with elision of the unstressed medial e and assimilation of the resulting consonant cluster -gr- > -dr- (compare sourd v.). Compare later resurge v.¹, and also resurse v.The form resourdre in quot. 1477 apparently represents the French infinitive.
