Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch reeuwsch.
Etymology: < Dutch †reeuwsch (1599 in Kiliaan, now reeuws ), probably a variant of reeds , †reedsch passionate, sexually aroused (1569 as reetsch ), probably < a reflex of an ablaut variant (o -grade) of the Germanic base of ride v. + -s , †-sch -ish suffix1.The Latin passage explaining the Dutch in quot. 1617 is quoting Kiliaan verbatim.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Lecherous; amorous, passionate. (As a conventional epithet in continental literature for the dove.)
