Etymology: In sense 1 < classical Latin restagnāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of restagnāre to overflow < re- re- prefix + stagnāre stagnate v. In sense 2 apparently arising as a result of association with classical Latin stagnāre stagnate v., perhaps after either French †restaigner to stagnate (second half of the 16th cent. in Middle French as restangner) or Italian ristagnare to cease to flow (c1340), to stagnate (a1575). Compare restagnant adj., restagnation n.
