Etymology: < post-classical Latin retroflexus (1686 or earlier in botanical use), use as adjective of the past participle of retroflectere to reflect (15th cent.) < classical Latin retro retro- prefix + flectere flex v. Compare retroflexion n., retroflected adj., retroflexed adj.For a suggestion that the word was current in sense 2 in 1912, and was coined by J. A. Yates, an inspector of schools in Southern India, see a letter from Daniel Jones to David Abercrombie, dated 27 Sept. 1956 (in D. Jones Unpublished Writings & Correspondence (2003)).
