Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Rickettsia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Rickettsia, genus name (H. da Rocha-Lima 1916, in Berliner klin. Wochenschr. 22 May 567/2) < the name of H. T. Ricketts (1871–1910), United States pathologist, who first described such organisms in 1909 ( Jrnl. Amer. Med. Assoc. 30 Jan. 379) and died of typhus contracted as a result of his research on them + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix2.
Microbiology.
Any of the small Gram-negative bacteria of the genus Rickettsia or, more widely, of the order Rickettsiales, which are intracellular parasites and symbionts of invertebrates and vertebrates, and include the causative agents of a number of human diseases transmitted by lice, fleas, ticks, or mites, including typhus and Rocky Mountain spotted fever; (in form Rickettsia) the genus itself. Frequently attributive.Being obligate intracellular parasites, Rickettsias were formerly regarded as intermediate between viruses and true bacteria. They are now usually placed in the class Alphaproteobacteria.
