Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin resurgere.
Etymology: < classical Latin resurgere to get up again, to return to a higher level, to rise above the horizon again, to spring up again, to become active again, revive, in post-classical Latin also to rise again (from the dead) (Vetus Latina) < re- re- prefix + surgere to rise (see surge v.). Compare Spanish resurgir (first half of the 14th cent.), Portuguese resurgir (13th cent.), Italian risorgere (early 14th cent. as resurgere , risurgere ), and also Middle French, French ressourdre (see resourd v.). Compare resurging n.1 and resurging adj. Compare earlier resurrection n. Compare also earlier resurse v.
