单词 review
释义

reviewn.

Brit. /rᵻˈvjuː/, U.S. /rəˈvju/, /riˈvju/ (also in branch II.)Brit. /riːˈvjuː/
Forms: late Middle English 1600s revewe, late Middle English–1600s reviewe, 1500s reuewe, 1500s reveu, 1500s revew, 1500s–1600s reuiew, 1500s–1600s reuiewe, 1500s– review, 1600s reueiw, 1600s reuew, 1600s reveiw, 1600s revieu.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French revue, reveue.
Etymology: < Middle French, French revue, †reveue reconsideration of some subject or thing (1317 in Old French), inspection of military forces (1356), fact of seeing a place or person again (1533), light theatrical entertainment, stage show (1843 as the title of a play; 1858 in Revue des variétés and Revue du Palais-Royal ; 1866 used independently, although earlier currency is suggested by revue n. 1a, a later reborrowing of the French noun), use as noun of feminine of past participle of revoir (see review v.), probably with remodelling of the second element after view n. Compare revise n., revision n.In the senses at branch II. now often apprehended as < re- prefix + view n., and consequently pronounced /riːˈvjuː/ and often spelt with a hyphen. In sense 7b, the English noun subsequently influenced the meaning of French revue (1711 denoting an English periodical; 1792 (in Revue du patriote ) denoting a French periodical; compare also le Review as the title of an English periodical in a French context (1708)). With sense 9 compare later revue n. With to make (also take) (a) review at Phrases 1a compare Middle French faire les reveues de (1466), Middle French faire la reveue de, French faire la revue de (1560).
I. The action or an act of looking over or inspecting.
1.
a. An inspection of military or naval forces; esp. a ceremonial display and formal inspection of troops or the fleet by a monarch, commander-in-chief, or high-ranking visitor.See also to make (also take) (a) review at Phrases 1a.

Forms: 1500s reuew, 1500s revew, 1500s–1600s reuewe, 1500s–1600s reuiew, 1500s–1600s reuiewe, 1500s–1600s revewe, 1500s–1600s reviewe, 1500s– review, 1600s reueiw, 1600s reuieue, 1600s reveive, 1600s reveiw, 1600s reveiwe, 1600s revieu, 1600s reviewe; Scottish pre-1700 revewe, pre-1700 1700s– review.
Origin: Formed within English, by conversion; partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: review n.
Etymology: < review n., partly after Middle French reveoir, Middle French, French revoir to view a second time (end of the 10th cent. in Old French as revedeir ), to examine or inspect (something) again (13th cent., originally and frequently with specific reference to re-examining a text), to look back in retrospect over (events, a period of time) (1651), to revise or go over (material already studied or learnt) (1686). Compare classical Latin revidēre to pay another visit (to), to revisit, in post-classical Latin also to see (a person or thing) again (6th cent.), to inspect, examine (14th cent.), Old Occitan revezer , Catalan reveure (15th cent.), Spanish rever (late 13th cent.; in sense ‘to revise’ now only common in American Spanish (Argentina), while the usual verb in this sense is revisar revise v.), Portuguese rever (14th cent. as rreuer ), Italian rivedere (late 13th cent.; also †rividere ), and also German revidieren (second half of the 16th cent.; < Latin). Compare earlier revise v., with which the word shows semantic overlap.
