Etymology: < return v.1 + -er suffix1. Compare Anglo-Norman retourner official who compiles reports in answer to a request for information (1412 in Anglo-Norman in retourner des briefs), Middle French, French retourneur (15th cent. in Middle French in an isolated attestation in sense ‘person who returns’; now only in sense ‘person who breaks with (a habit)’ (1875 in retourneur des habits)).
