Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rētiārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin rētiārius gladiator who carried a net for entangling his opponent < rēte net (see rete n.) + -ārius -ary suffix1.Quots. 1647 and 1693 translate verses in Juvenal (Satires 8. 201ff.), but Juvenal does not actually use the word rētiārius. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciations (rītiˌēə·riɒ̆s, rīʃiˌēə·riɒ̆s) /riːtɪˈɛərɪəs/, /riːʃɪˈɛərɪəs/.
Roman History.
A Roman gladiator who fought with a net and trident. Also figurative in allusion to a person whose tactics are designed to ensnare or trap an opponent.
