Origin: A borrowing from French, combined with English elements. Etymons: French revalidacion , re- prefix, validation n.
Etymology: In quot. 1522 perhaps < Middle French revalidacion (1460; French revalidation ) < revalider (see revalidate v.) + -ation -ation suffix. In later use < re- prefix + validation n., after revalidate v.With the later specific use compare the following comment from Lord Irvine of Lairg (Lord Chancellor 1997–2003):2013 D. Irvine Email 17 Apr. (O.E.D. Archive) On revalidation,..I first used it on 30 June 1998 in..[a] letter to Professor Roderick McSween, then chairman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. This was the letter which signalled the beginning of revalidation.
The action or an instance of revalidating; reappraisal and reaffirmation of something as valid; spec. (in later use) (British) the recertification and relicensing of a doctor or other medical professional.
