Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French réveil.
Etymology: < French réveil music played on the drum or trumpet to announce the hour of waking or rising (c1570 in Middle French), transferred use of réveil act of rising from sleep (13th cent. in Old French as reveil ; compare Middle French, French donner réveil à to wake (a person) up (a1506)) < reveiller to awaken (see reveille n.). Compare earlier reveille n.
