Forms: α. Middle English eukaryste, 1500s eucarist, euchariste, euchrist, 1500s– eucharist; β. 1500s eucharistie, 1700s eucharisty.
Etymology: < Old French eucariste (compare modern French eucharistie ), < late Latin eucharistia , < Greek εὐχαριστία thanksgiving, hence the Lord's Supper, < εὐχάριστος grateful, < εὐ- (see eu- comb. form) + stem of χαρίζεσθαι to offer willingly. The β forms may either be < Latin or < modern French.
