Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Rhabdom.
Etymology: < German Rhabdom (1878 or earlier) < Byzantine Greek ῥάβδωμα rod or bundle of rods < ancient Greek ῥάβδος rod (see rhabdo- comb. form) + -ωμα (see -ome comb. form).
Zoology.
A translucent cylinder forming part of the light-sensitive receptor in the compound eyes of insects, crustaceans, and cephalopod molluscs, consisting of the closely packed or fused rhabdomeres of adjacent retinula cells.
