单词 right whale
释义

right whalen.

Brit. /ˈrʌɪt ˌweɪl/, U.S. /ˈraɪt ˌweɪl/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: right adj., whale n.
Etymology: < right adj. + whale n.Most commonly explained as showing right adj. 7a ‘appropriate, suitable’ (see quot. 1994 at main sense), though it also seems possible that it may show right adj. 13.
Any of several rotund baleen whales constituting the family Balaenidae, having a deeply curved jaw and no dorsal fin, and found in cold and temperate waters: (a) (more fully black right whale) any of those belonging to the genus Eubalaena, having distinctive callosities on the snout and comprising three populations in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and Southern Oceans, now usually recognized as distinct species; (b) (in full Greenland right whale) the bowhead, Balaena mysticetus. Also: (in full pygmy right whale) a small baleen whale, Caperea marginata, found in temperate waters of the southern hemisphere, now placed in a separate family ( Neobalaenidae).
