Etymology: Partly < ridge n.1 + -er suffix1, and partly < ridge v. + -er suffix1. With sense 1 compare earlier ridge-band n., ridge rope n.
1. A broad strap or chain passing over a cart saddle, and serving to support the shafts; = ridge-band n. In later use chiefly English regional (southern).
