Any of various articulate brachiopods constituting the family Rhynchonellidae or (later) the order Rhynchonellida, having strongly ridged, wedge-shaped shells that come to a point at the hinge.These brachiopods were common in the Palaeozoic era and abundant in the Mesozoic, after which they declined. The family Rhynchonellidae, as currently defined, is not extant.
