Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Rhynchosporium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Rhynchosporium, genus name (E. Heinsen 1900, in Jahrbuch der Hamburgischen Wissensch. Anstalten (3. Beiheft) 18 43) < rhyncho- rhyncho- comb. form + -sporium (in e.g. cladosporium n.). Compare scientific Latin Rhynchospora, name of a genus of sedges (1810 or earlier) and rhynchosporus adjective (1837 or earlier).
Mycology.
Any member of the genus Rhynchosporium of ascomycete fungi, the members of which cause leaf blotch diseases in cereals and other grasses; esp. R. secalis, which is a major pathogen of barley and rye; (also as a mass noun) disease caused by such fungi. Also (in form Rhynchosporium): the genus itself. Frequently attributive.
