Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Rialto.
Etymology: < Rialto (Italian Rialto), the name of an area in Venice on the left bank of the Grand Canal, adjoining a famous bridge which also takes its name from this area; this area (originally a distinct island in the lagoon) contained the old mercantile quarter of medieval Venice, and the principal marketplace of the city.The literary currency of the word is perhaps partly owing to the use of the place name by Shakespeare:1600 W.
