A coordinate used together with declination to specify the location of a point or object on the celestial sphere in the equatorial coordinate system, being the angular distance of an object from the first point of Aries (the vernal equinox) measured eastwards along the celestial equator to where the hour circle of the object meets the equator; (equivalently) the angular distance of an object from the point on the equator which rises with the object in a right sphere. Abbreviated R.A. Cf. right descension n. at right adj. and int. Compounds 2.Right ascension is the celestial analogue of terrestrial longitude, but is conventionally expressed in hours, minutes, and seconds of sidereal time; the equivalent of terrestrial latitude is declination (declination n. 7).
